So my bike has had problems starting warm since I bought it, meaning that if I have been riding for a while and stop for gas then I have to rev it for a few seconds to get it to catch and start. I had never had problems with the bike dead cold until today. I started up my bike (choke on) and put on my gear while it was warming up. The revs started dropping from 1200 to around 500 and then finally died (this happens sometimes when it is already warm). I started it again and had to rev it a little for a few seconds to make it catch. When I say rev a little I mean I roll on the throttle in short little bursts. Sometimes it will still die and I will have to try again. Anyone know what this might be? I have seen a thread similar to this one already about a kawi 250, but figured my problem was a little different. Any help would be great.

Sounds like the carbs are not adjusted right. In particular the idle mixture screws probably need some tweaking.

Which WAY they need to be tweaked depends on how the carbs were adjusted in the past and what mods are on your bike.

If you're happy diddling with them and know what to feel for in how it runs then you can play with them yourself. But the quick and sure way to "fix" this is have a mechanic that's also a good tuner do the work.

Also depending on how often and how long the bike has been stored for over the years the carbs may be dirty and need cleaning. Similarly it's just possible that this is a new issue to go along with the maladjusted carbs. Like rust in the tank that is clogging the carbs. And then it's just possible that your petcock isn't opening properley. For that you need to disconnect the hose and see if it can flow out a liter per minute or more of gas.

Lots of possible things but not enough info to go on from what you typed. And it's difficult to say if it's rich or lean at this point without hearing more about how it runs at idle and when pulling away under light throttle. I've written that description of what to look for before. See if you can search for it with "idle mixture adjust" as the keywords.

I have a k&n filter and a yoshimura rs3 slip on, not jetted. Was going to get jetting done over winter, but I guess the sooner the better.

I always warm it up to 48 degrees before I ride off into the sunset, sometimes it sputters for the first 20 or so feet then everything seems fine.

Good mechanic who is also a good tuner? I assume from every other post on this forum, that would mean Bill at 5th gear? I'm in N Van, any closer suggestions? Willing to travel if that means better.

I'm going to search for that previous thread. Thanks Tee Tee.:cheers

Done this once, not too long ago actually, but since learned to check the choke before taking off.
I had similar problems with my gixer.
Was the petcock, the one on my bike has a fuel filter built onto it.
Mine was cruded up so not enough gas was getting to the carbs.
If thats what it is, easier to just order a new one.
A K&N plus a Yosh and no jet kit would tell me that you're running lean most likely. The fact that it's getting worse as the weather is getting cooler supports this. You could probably fix the idle mix and at least make the bike start and idle easier if you can find the idle mixture screws and if the OEM caps have been pulled out. If you don't really want to mess with this then it's jet kit time at a shop for you.

If the plugs over the screws have never been popped out then it means a total carb bank removal to do this work. You comfy with that?

not comfy with more work if that's what you mean, but if it must be done then don't have much of a choice. Time for a shop for sure, I'm not that handy with bikes. Any idea on the rough cost for that work? Thanks for the help guys.
