Got a Rebel 250 to play around with, but for some reason, the gear jumps to Neutral from 1st quite often. Anyone know the cause or have an idea? The bike was dropped once from a slow turn.

what do you mean, when you are shifting - or just riding along in 1st and it pops out?

Riding on 1st and popped. I understand that sometimes when we shift to first or second, not tapping enough would end up in Neutral, but the thing is, even when riding for a little bit on 1st (like about 5 seconds on a slow street, it just popped into neutral all of a sudden).

hmmmm...sounds like the bike is fucked....if it's popping out....like misshifts happen but poppin outta gear would say that the gear is hooped....PM teetee he is SMRT about bikes....

First off I'd suggest that you play a little with the shift lever angle to ensure that you get clean shifts in both directions without having to stretch your ankle joint too far. If you're needing to strain then often you'll end up with a partial shift and it can then pop out.

If that's not it then it may well be that you have either a bent shifter fork that isn't putting the first gear into place properley or the engagement dogs are worn or both. A bent shifter fork from a previous owner jamming it too often and too hard will lead to partial engagements which then cause jumping out. Too much jumping out is hard on the engagement dog teeth and that compounds the problem.

Usually this won't really be caused by a fall unless you jammed the shift lever pretty hard. In that case a trip under the right side case may show something bent that engages with the shifter shaft and if that's the case a bit of tweaking would likely put things back right.

It just depends on if the issue was there before the drop or only showed up after it.
