I'm considering a couple of dirt bikes for the Mrs and me. I don't want a mind blowing ride like the 450 crf. Both bikes must have electric start.... i'm lazy and old. I've heard that Honda's are the cats meow, but I am not loyal to any brand. I looked at the 450 crx? and the 250 crx? A little pricey, but.. Any ideas from thoise of you who ride? I am not going to race either bike, so I don't mind a lack of power.

You might also consider a CRF230F. Those are damn near bulletproof, and can be Baja'ed up for street legalness if wanted. After I got the KX250, which is "yank your arms out of their sockets goodness", I got addicted, so I also got a CRF230F and CRF450X. I love all 3 for what they do. Meighan rides the 230 and I ride both the 250 and the 450.

Go with a thumper (4 stroke) for the linear power, and yes, the nice electric start. However, kickstart, once you know how to do it, is easy.

I don't have any interest in street legal bikes. Now that i've said that i'll do one day on the street and be hooked. It would be nice to have a light in case of's. I heard that the 125's are great, but a little underpowered? What is cheaper than Honda's Bill? For the Honda 450 and the 230 it was about 12,000.00. That's too much to pay for someone of my "unability." I have ridden dirt bikes, but it was almost 20 years ago. I think it was an IR or IT175.
Shit that bike makes me feel old.

I ride a Husky 125 and love it. It has lot's of bottom end power and is extremely light compared to a 4 stroke. You can lug it up any hill being just off idle. The Husky's are cheaper and better bush bikes than the Honda's. The bikes are streetlegal but just barely. It's a good feature when you want to resell it.Dualsports are hot right now.

Go to a Honda dealer and tilt the bike from side to side then come try that with the Husky. There's a huge difference in top end weight. A bike with a low center of gravity is far easier and forgiving to ride.

Hey Dude!

Welcome to the DIRT World!! Sounds like a great idea for you and the better-half to get out play.:rockon

Let me know when you get hooked up. We’ll go to the Sunshine Coast and I’ll give you the full tour. It’s got some great roads to get “your feet wet”

SOooo,

I guess you survived T. Hill, how was it?

Hey Rob,, give me a call if you hit the sunshine coast, I would be all over that,, blow out some cobwebs, and cut loose on some tight single track. I can fit 3 bikes and gear in my van, so let me know.

I might have a chance this week to take a look at some bikes at your shop Bill. I am 6' and 200 lbs if that makes a diff on those bikes.
Hey Rob270, Thill was awesome. Me and Carlos tore up that track pretty well. Got to rip around with Andrew Northcott and a couple of other mag guys. It was difficult maintaining that pace after a while though. I didn't want to go home with cruthces. I had Dean Misdal(former AMA) instruct me personally both days. The best part was getting a 2 up ride with the man Jason Pridmore himself. He was about 3 seconds a lap faster with me on the back than I could run by myself. A very humbling experience again. No wheelies unlike you doubling me of course, but fun nonetheless. I just want a dirtbike to have a litle fun in the sun with the Mrs and others. Not looking for your bike. Wheelies in 5th at 70mph is something I want to try at the end of time, not the beginning. Roadracing seems much safer than dirting from what I can tell. Maybe I should ask the crash King Mr. Trevor Shires how it compares, although you're not far behind.:laughing

Hey Sean, slipping over to the dark side are ya? You'll love it.

It's tough to say what kinda riding you will enjoy the most until you get out and do it. I started doing logging roads because my leg was still pretty broken and I figured it was semi-safe. I am now very happy doing intermediate/hard single track. I find it to be fairly safe but I still say "OH SHIT!" in my lid at least a couple times a day. You need that extra bit to keep you challenged. I keep the speeds down and the terrain tough.

The beauty of dirt riding is generally you can either go around or go slower to keep safe. The more you ride though, the more you will go faster and right over it.

What bike to get? I dunno for you. This is how I decided. I looked at rebuild costs since I am going to keep it for a while (2 stroke vs. race 4 stroke), I wanted a bike that can do anything (trails or MX) since I wasn't sure what riding I liked and only wanted to buy one bike. I thought about an XR400 since the are pretty strong in trails but heavy and hard to start. I am extremely happy with the KX250. Tonnes of torque and HP. I can lug it (with clutch work) or rip it. The rebuild is way cheaper than a CRF450.

I also looked long and hard to find a bike a few years old but hardly used. Saved me 1/2 the purchase price. You have to get a bit lucky to get a good one. I should buy a lotto 6/49 ticket.

Enjoy the dirt buddy!

I also have a mint 2005 KDX 220. It's the best of both worlds kind of like a 4stroke kind of like a 2 Stroke. Great all round trail bike. This one has about $2500 in upgrades. I'll let it go for cheap.

We're also building a 2000 KX 250 like Gixxer 76 has. There a good bike when there set up right for the bush.

I should state that Bill built my 2000 KX 250, and it does make for fun play, and the thing just flys!
