Metal In Oil?

788 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  PortAdian
Hey i got a question for all you smart people. My friend Mark owns an 02 CBR and he said that when he did an oil change last week that he saw some metal deposits. Sounds crazy to me...but i never really checked my old oil.

Any ideas?

sure... where did he see them?... magnetic drain plug?... or just shiny bits in the oil?.... magnetic plug will not pick up non-ferrous metals, but shiny bits in the oil could be from anywhere.

OK define 'some' ... every piston engine will make a bit of metal with time, thats why we have oil filters.

Now with bikes, add a transmission to the mix and you will always get 'some' metal with every change.

IF your friend is noticing a CHANGE IN THE AMOUNT of oil in the metal, them there is a problem.
That's right. And don't forget the metal from the wet clutch.

I had occasion to take the clutch cover off my Husky and found a little "pool" of metal flake rich oil just below the clutch.

With time the amount of metal should go down quite a lot. Older engines should have finished this other than for the clutch plates.
.... OOOOOhhh metal in the oil....that's bad. Give that bike to me. You don't want that... it's all bad.

Are we talking Shavings, flakes, chunks or pieces of gears?
