Yeah, with Laser you're kinda pooched. Those things are usually on a tripod and can easily get a motorcycle 1,000 meters away.

The latest increase in fines has motivated me to research. I don't want to jinx myself but I have never dented a vehicle ever in 28years of driving, 30 if you count the two years I had a learners in Alberta at the age of 14. I plowed snow commercially for a decade too as well as put lots of kms on each year. I'm 10years without a ticket of any sort and yet if I get caught out in the mountains at 40kmph over my bike is being impounded and it's costing me a small fortune? *Truly frustrating to me on an individual basis. My track record speaks for itself at this point. I'm either extremely lucky or a very good attentive driver.

I seem to rarely to never see laser in my neck of the woods, but I know it's around and obviously when I travel to other places I don't know the lay of the land so much. I'd heard it's not so easy to get a reading on a bike? *But I'll take your word for it if you say it is.

Really considering these new units with driver updates and whatnot. Even though I don't know yet if that functionality is even relevant in Canada? I'd like to protect myself as much as is legally and practically possible. *

I couldn't be happier with how my x50 has performed over the years. I would never go on a trip without it.
Looks to me like now there's a x70 that's replaced that. I've also seen a x80 but haven't seen it available for sale. Just checking Amazon availability. Then I see there's a ix that's described as long range at near twice the price?*

Instant on radar is hard to detect. Ask my buddy with an expensive detector.
I have no doubts that it's easy enough to get a ticket with a radar detector. But I went seven years with my old bel unit without a ticket while driving for my summer car a 350z. I was younger then I am now and less responsible. That bel unit has saved me countless times over the years. I know it takes discipline on all levels to avoid tickets but I do feel that a detector is a valuable tool to have. I've pretty much made up my mind to roll with one on my bike. Even if it's just wiring in a adaptor for the old bel unit. I know they're not a failsafe and not to rely on it, just another little bit of help.*

I can't help but feel insulted by the crackdown on 'speeders' in the province. Maybe it's different elsewhere in the province but here now in one generation it's gone from 10k over being the 'rule' of the road to people feeling justified doing 10k under to barely the speed limit on my main thoroughfare hwy6 which I think you described yourself once as sucking so bad you'd avoid travelling it again. The problem isn't speed, I've always driven quick it's awareness and skills. My dad taught me to drive before I could even reach the pedals, sitting on his lap. He drilled the skill set into me relentlessly and always stressed how on a day to day basis driving is the biggest responsibility 99% of people will have. I drive always with focus and attention to the task at hand. It never took any distracted driving laws to make me think that way. Rant almost over.....the problem is shit drivers, with no skill, no focus, and no sense for the responsibility of what they're doing. Let's be honest if you can't pilot a road worthy vehicle down our highways at even say 20k over the limit you really shouldn't even be behind the wheel.*

Now I know none of my thoughts or banging on about them are going to change anything. But I'd like to put a newer detector in the arsenal of fine prevention if it's going to be a decent step up from my old bel. It's a bel 870 if anyone here knows much about antique detectors. Lol. I'm curious if I would notice increased detection? Decreased false alerts?

Just don't speed anywhere with a 1K sightline!

For detectors I have a 10 year old BEL Sti and it does well but the current cars with the smart cruise control etc. cause a lot of false alerts. All in all though I find it worth running on the VFR. I don't' have wired in on the motard.

For the VFR I used the included permanent harness for power. I did try a cigarette plug first but it fouled the steering. The detector is on a RAM mount and I use the Legal Speeding Bluetooth kit to set off a LED in my helmet.

And of course I always follow the normal rules of not being the first rabbit over the hill. Not speeding in the easy catch spots where the limit changes coming into towns and I also never ever speed.

Oh and for LASER in the Okanagan that big straight stretch in Lake Country that goes down to 70 is the hot spot. They can probably pay a years worth of bills in one day's catch. The setup along the water in the pullouts just south of the airport or the section that's 5 lanes by the Husky station.

I've had good service out of the Adaptiv Technologies TPX motorcycle-specific radar units. They seem to offer about the same sensitivity as an Escort 8500, which was what a former riding partner of mine used, and the TPX is weatherproof, so you don't need to baggie it up when the weather turns foul on an outing. I use the visual alert, mounted low in my visual field, on top of the cowl. They offer a wireless headset, but I find it's not loud enough to hear at highway speeds. I've had a couple different Bluetooth dongles ( both from Adaptiv), but I've had no luck at consistently pairing it with my Sena. When that works, the alert is plenty loud, but mostly, it doesn't - maybe my ineptitude... maybe a hardware or system problem?

And, yes, as Danke mentions, more and more false alerts because of 'emitters' in modern cars... and long-haul trucks on the interstates too...

I installed an Escort Qi45 permanently on my bike soon after purchase - it has antenna, brain box and display. The former is weatherproof, the other two are placed, wrapped and protected in such that I have had stellar performance for 8 years. I wanted something that I could leave on the bike and not worry about lugging around. I installed a screamer (external speaker), a bright LED and a bluetooth setup to my Sena, but find the bluetooth lags the alerts too much to be useful and the LED isn't helpful as it sits on the dash. Also, the installation is ignored by nearly everyone but the very curious or the keenest observers. The detector has laser detection, which has saved me numerous times, as has the radar. I leave it on "highway" setting, practice prudent pace in towns and try an avoid being the first bunny over the hill. The only thing to remember is to turn the screamer back on after an alert (the alerts last the duration of the radar being capture by the detector). The action of turning on the screamer is now muscle memory - I will turn it on (when its already on), nearly continuously, which suggests my subconscious is pretty paranoid...

The new hot setup is detectors that allow you to filter out useless K and Ka bands. Laser? Well, even though you can't beat them, I would say 25 percent of the time I win when the detector picks up the laser spraying a car ahead of me.

I've been able to avoid tickets for teh past 3 years. I think it has more to do with becoming a good operator than it does with the actual detector. Avoid being the lead vehicle in a pack, take advantage of rabbits whenever you can, avoid speeding on long straight wide open streteches.....and...

Ride with buddies tha also have detectors, just different brands/models. I'm always surprised how one detector picks up a signal before another, and its always a different detector.

Communication systems are key as well.

Lots of good advice here. For now, the king of distance and filtering at the moment are the Uniden R series detectors; they also come with a 3.5mm input so a bluetooth transmitting dongle will work well with *some* BT communication systems.

As for laser, your only real defense outside of smart riding is an ALP. Big $$$.

Great input everyone. I follow all of the basic rules for not getting tickets. Was just wanting to up my game for riding on the bike next year. The last two seasons I haven't had a detector on my bike and no issues. I keep it tame in traffic and town but when I head off into the hills to play a bit I'm not looking to get the big fines. For what I need a detector for I may just put my old bel onto the bike and see how it works before dropping a bunch of coin on a newer one. The places where I need radar protection don't seem to ever have speed traps or very little enforcement anyways. More often then not cruisers are just rolling along with their radar on and the old bel seems to pick those up accurately and with plenty of forewarning.*

I think the old unit and some common sense(which I already employ)could be all I need to stay on my clean streak. 10 years ticket free in BC is a accomplishment I'm quite proud of.*

Thanks for the info. Got mine today. On sale at visions dot ca. Did not buy the alp ...lol.

I had to scrap two really old obsolete detectors. Like Squisher says, it can't hurt. I've been ticket free for many years and want to keep it that way. Not a problem on 4 wheels but bikes are riskier.

R1. Upgradeable firmware. Lots of settings. Setup for BC from kmph.ca.

Visions will beat bestbuy prices. Got some great deals over the years. Always better to deal at the store - they will often drop 10 or 20 bucks on smaller purchases.

Kmph lists the best settings for BC for various devices. I copied their suggestions. I don't really want to spend a lot of time fooling with it.

They sell detectors too with updated firmware for a few bucks more. Kmph that is.

So I thought I'd research my old bel a bit before dropping any coin on a newer unit. Found a thread on a radar forum from '05 describing it as a really old detector. Lol. Then found one other poking fun at its sensitivity.*

I'll be curious Oldgixxer to hear any comments/thoughts you might have from going from a old detector to this new one once you've driven with it for a bit. Specifically your thoughts on false alarms from all the civilian vehicles equipped with radar sensors now. *
