That's just the way the stock can is made. It's got a ton of baffle in there to make it quiet, plus it's huge. Get a pipe as soon as you are done your break in and you'll have a bike that sounds as badass as it looks!
Yes, they are quiet all right. I imagine the 954's exhaust is similar to my 929, and although I have only had a slip-on for a week now, it is so much better! I totally enjoy listening to my bike start up and idle whereas before I had to get the rpm's up before I liked the sound.
You can tune your stock pipe to produce better sound using a screw driver. A long screw driver, and a hammer... just poke holes in the baffles inside until it sounds right.
