Hey my friend and I are interested in getting some communication equiptment during long rides. It would fun to talk shit during a ride. "You corner slower than my mama's Navigator" .. or I think it would also come in handy when taking exists and alerting others about speed traps???

Anyways .. those Chatterboxes are expensive!!! This got me thinking about alternatives again =) I went to the futureshop website and checked out some Motorola Talkabout Radios .. they have one with VOICE ACTIVATION for $89.99 after rebate?

I was just wondering what you guys use? It would obviously have to be voice activated and hands free? Does the higher end Talkabout radios offer this function? I just want to know what others are using? The chatterbox would look cool on the helmet.

Hrm .. I am a squid for admitting this .. but I always wanted to put a BENZ style knobby antenna on the tail of my bike =) I would only put it on if it was functional =) haha .. thinking I could wire the antenna for something =)

I'm trying to get it going. I got one of the higher end Motorola FRS's but I can't find a good headset that is VOX activated with a mini earplug. Most of them have the big earpiece and boom mic. and the ones that are small enough are PTT (push to talk). Of course I'd keep chatter to a minimum but I'm sure they would come in handy on a group ride.
Before more ppl read this and think "whats LE smoking" .. I meant Motorola FRS and not talking about those pimpin Motorola Talkabouts (2 way messaging) .. .

GTI you answered my question .. so the smaller ear pces are still push to talk right .. hrm .. Does the FRS itself have to have the handsfree option or is it the headset?

I'd be up for a group purchase if anyone finds a viable option.
BK had a set of motorcycle specific radios a short while back. I believe they were FRS and had the proper ear pieces and VOX and all. About $300 IIRC
LE,

The main problem with Voice activation on an FRS is that the wind noise in a helmet is loud enough to activate it.

The voice activation levels between the FRS radio's and the chatterboxes are designed for two seperate and distinct purposes..

We may be better off doing a GP with a place like BK and getting a bunch of chatterboxes..

Jim.
I waited for a deal at Futureshop for the Motorola T6310. Hey, they have it on sale right now actually. It's got built in vox so you don't need a headset but on a bike you'd need the headset. Also the vox has different sensitivity levels and there shouldn't be that much wind noise in a helmet. The smallest headset for it that I've found is made by jabra. I'll keep you up to date if I ever it mine going.
i don't think i want someone talking to me when im in midcorner saying OH SHIT OH SHIT !!!:D
those chatterbox things are pretty awkward too b/c they clip onto your helmet and you have this big honking box stuck to the side of it.

This was the model I was looking at as well .. I just need to see the headset in person and to find out whether or not it works with voice activation properly .. I'll actually head down to FutureShop today to get my hands on the unit. $90 compared to $250-$350 for a chatterbox is a huge saving.
I have heard from people on SBN saying that anything at highway speeds or faster and it is next to impossible to hear anything.... is this true??? it might help to tuck in behind the windscreen to talk/listen since that cuts down on noise.....
I rather have a PTT button unit like what Action used. Reason : I don't want to talk unless I was safe to do so, and I expect my friend do the same thing. Second, if the VOX is activated by wind noise on my friend unit, I don't need more wind noise within my helmet.
Hmm you could do a test for wind noise with your cell phone. Most of those headsets are small, and you could set it to auto answer on the first ring. Mind you this is for a test and I wouldn't recomend answering calls while riding.

As for PTT, I guess you would have to jimmy something together to get the button to your handlebars.

LE, I recomend ordering it online since futureslop never seems to have them in stock.
ICBC uses your standard walkie talkie, I remember using the thing on my road test.... it was fine for regular side streets and stuff.... but on the highway they really didn't talk to me, so....

but I guess when your on a hayabusa doing 300+ km/h , you dont exactly want to be talkin to your buddy that is following behind you on his zx12r :)
I've thought about this for a while, and I think the only good way to do it is with the Chatterbox. Trying to rig up a Motorola walkie is going to be a big pain in the butt I think, and will never work as well as the Catterbox's do.

The only reason I haven't bought one is because I know NO-ONE with one.

If you all want to buy, I'm sure we can get a great Group Purchase going. I'm in if we can get a few of us in on it.

They ain't cheap though. :mad
Kev(LE) , i think a GP Chatterbox would be a more suitable option. Because those walkie talkies are not really made for motorcycling. and also, if u were wearing leathers, then u'll have no where to put it. Even if u did, it would look like spider webs all over urself.
don't get a chatterbox man !!
just wait by the side of the road every once in a while for everyone to catch up:D
Well I went down to futureshop today .. it is a web exclusive sale on their voice activated motorola model. reg $129.99 and now it is $89.99 over the web. headset is another $25.

Here is my take on it .. Chatterbox .. same technology but in a shape that is attached to your helmet .. u still got wires u need to place close to your mouth right? Its alot cheaper getting the FRS with voice activation. The sensitivity is adjustable.

I'll get the FRS from futureshop sometime soon and tell you guys how it works out. I wanted one anyways for playing around with while camping and for car trips.

It's $129.99 over the web too. You gotta mail in the rebate (US funds) to get it down to ~$90.

Yeah, they come in handy for snowboarding, car trips, street racing, etc.

Big Jim is right...
i own one of the newer panasonic talkabout FRS with voice activation (i got the blue coloured model without the scramble feature that the silver ones have) but the sensivity adjustment levels on those things is crappy....
i was playing around with them talking with a friend that also has one while riding our mountain bikes n the wind activated it.
n to add to the cons, FRS's have horrible range. the range they claim is a clear line of sight on a sunny day.
although i dont know much about the chatterboxes, i'm quite sure they're a helluva lot better than the FRS's since they were designed for riding. just in imo at least...
Ya the feedback from wind is a problem. Anyone use a Chatterbox and can confirm its usefulness? Whatever, it was something Mick wanted to buy and he got me interested =) Maybe I'll just stick to my headlight flashing and hand signals.

Hey Mick, if I give you the finger .. it means fuck you :D
