Nor Cali - Fall 2018 - Pre Doom Trip

Since I see some dust moving around in here...

:imwithstu

Is there... something... alive ??

:roflmao :roflmao

Looking to do a 5-6 day quick trip to N Cal,
likely based around a weekend, between now
and the end of October

Drive down, ride for 3-4 days, drive back

Best bang for the buck works with a 5 day
trip, 3 days with overnight gear on bikes,
and a 10 hour drive days on either end

22 or so hours and 1600 km on the best (in
my opinion) roads out of Redding area

:happysq

Have a truck with room for 3 bikes and people
in the truck, or 4 bikes/people with a trailer

I suppose it must be said - I suggest...

:rtfm

- a bike in decent shape (tires, chain etc)
- some decent riding gear

PM for details

:truck

OK - so here are my thoughts... :evilgrin

Ride directions and routes for staying low elevation and/or
easy riding in the AM, (where possible), and loops that allow
covering all the good bits, while avoiding the slab, and bogus
sections of road (or minimizing those) :thumbup :thumbup

Day 1 = Drive to Yreka (9:00 - 10:00'ish hours if leaving at 8:00 AM,
975 Km from Blaine) - overnight there

Yreka is not the most touristy town - but has a Black Bear Diner, decent
hotels, and stopping there saves 3-4 hours in the truck (over Redding
or Anderson)

Plus - the ride routes work better out of there - especially for
3 riding days :happysq

https://www.google.ca/maps/dir/Blaine,+Washington,+USA/Yreka,+California+96097,+USA/@45.176538,-124.5054981,7z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x5485c1359fb984e7:0x6ddc7f512f77d8cc!2m2!1d-122.7471191!2d48.993723!1m5!1m1!1s0x54ce1423d0d23a83:0xc4bb4066332c405d!2m2!1d-122.6344709!2d41.7354186!3e0

Day 2 = Ride: Yreka -> Oroville (8:50, 648 Km) - that has all the
good bits in it - can take out the Mineral Cutoff - or just do Hwy 70
(out and back) if it is a cooler day

Leaves the RTITS (Race Track In The Sky) until the last part of
the day as that is the highest elevation riding :rockon

Oroville has good restaurants and pubs - and staying there means
only riding the bogus section from Oroville to Red Bluff once

https://www.google.ca/maps/dir/Yreka,+CA,+USA/Oroville,+California,+USA/@40.6026157,-122.3070056,9z/data=!4m39!4m38!1m30!1m1!1s0x54ce1423d0d23a83:0xc4bb4066332c405d!2m2!1d-122.6344709!2d41.7354186!3m4!1m2!1d-121.4850697!2d40.5283578!3s0x54cd4e73f40bf9d7:0x45792010cabe2dae!3m4!1m2!1d-121.5772025!2d40.3250051!3s0x809d53a7b5409ac3:0xa961f1bf1e2e2370!3m4!1m2!1d-121.7271336!2d39.7842742!3s0x808329fea885be85:0x325f2a3e8e074ecc!3m4!1m2!1d-121.0811079!2d40.0186918!3s0x809d1d2eaa550c7b:0x35dee7d943e5d938!3m4!1m2!1d-120.9893481!2d39.67207!3s0x809c8c797c5dbb4b:0x39b7a7e8af168403!1m5!1m1!1s0x809cb6034a842e11:0xb56919d60de28347!2m2!1d-121.556359!2d39.5137752!3e0

Day 3 = Ride: Orovile -> Eureka (7:06, 552 Km) - again, has all
the good bits, and can be shortened a bunch.

As it is below - I love it: gets Platina Rd, the Hayfork portion of Hwy 3 (fantastic),
the best part of 299 east of Weaverville (as an out and back), and the Trinity
Dam loop (a variant - but can be dropped easily) ... and avoids the slab
up to Redding, and the boring section on 299 west of there

Eureka is a great town to stay at, breweries and restaurants close to
accommodation, beach is a 10 min walk, and ocean surf is a 10 min
ride from accommodation :noevil

Day 4 = Ride: Eureka -> Yreka (7:00, 475 Km)

Last riding day, starts out low elevation, does a repeat of the Hayfork portion of Hwy 3,
and finishes with a bang on the Cecilville Road :tredmill

https://www.google.ca/maps/dir/Eureka,+CA,+USA/Yreka,+California+96097,+USA/@41.0518633,-123.9859019,9z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m29!4m28!1m20!1m1!1s0x54d3ff83e6ff4ea7:0x2a860766b8290695!2m2!1d-124.1636729!2d40.8020712!3m4!1m2!1d-123.9133726!2d40.4806339!3s0x54d471392185e9cb:0x9feea3bc58e81c5!3m4!1m2!1d-122.6986429!2d41.2812076!3s0x54ce000aebcfc9e9:0x6e6a04c47d6bbb1d!3m4!1m2!1d-123.1246082!2d41.1437368!3s0x54d18a99454e8ce3:0x2de2d242a620c3e7!1m5!1m1!1s0x54ce1423d0d23a83:0xc4bb4066332c405d!2m2!1d-122.6344709!2d41.7354186!3e0

Day 5 = Drive: Yreka -> Blaine (9:00 - 10:00'ish hours if leaving at 8:00 AM, 975 Km)

3 action packed days of riding !

I generally ride faster than Google suggests, even taking pics,
gas stops, lunch etc - so routes should be doable between
say 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM each day - so even in later fall
weather will be warm during the day = :cool

:cheers

No dates set yet - just collecting interest and juggling

no problem. with so many great roads in that area it would suck to be sitting behind a escort truck rather than riding something epic.

wish i was joining you on the trip.
