Don't you hate it when you spend the better part of a week sanding and painting, placing coat after coat, finding the perfect place to put your decals... then you're finally on the clear coat..... AND A HAIR FALLS ON IT!
So I had a hair on my top coat, that turned to a smudge when i touched it, that turned to a line when i rubbed it, and then i just went crazy with a rag out of frustration.
I was going to really try and be patient and not touch it for 24-48 hours so it cures really hard and then i was going to sand the hell out of it to get this section totally flat, then move up to a higher grit until it's super smooth then put more white coats on this section. (I can't redo the whole thing because I don't have more decals).
What do you guys think? Any tips on how to fix this? Grit/Procedure? :2cents
Will do! Lol. Okay since everyone is just poking at me, I guess there's nothing special to do but sand the side and recoat! I'll let you guys know how it turns out!
Wow, that sure snowballed into a major slide. You have 2 choices, get big decals to cover it or start over and hope it matches up well. Get tweezers next time. That reminds me of a 900SS Ducati that came from the factory for the American racing season, it had lump or a bubble under the decal that ran the lenght of the top of the tank. When they pulled off the decal to repair they found a housefly under the decal , it had landed on the wetpaint and the fellow putting on the decal had not even bothered to remove it. Ducati was very questionable with quality control back then.\ I understand that it was the Ducati that won the AMA superbike championship in 1973 or there abouts. So even factories make messes.

The bike was a round case 750SS. Owned by Cook Neilson and Phil Schilling. Not a factory bike but a hot rod in every sense of the word.
http://www.ducatimeccanica.com/articles/1.html In that model bike, the fibreglass tank had a see-through section so one could check the fuel level. That's where the fly was - molded into the fibreglass. Ha! If you look at the picture on page two of this article you'll see the transparent tank section behind Neilson's left wrist.
Didn't win the AMA Superbike championship but it did win at Daytona in 1976 or '77.
If you want to do it properly then you'd have to redo the whole tank. You can likely remove the decals with a hair dryer to soften the glue first. Or did you clear coat over the decals? If you try to do a "spot" reply you will likely see the transition - might help if you re-clear the whole tank for the last few layers.
Thanks for the heads up! This was actually what I was wondering. I spend about an hour last night and this morning sanding down the side, and I just put the first new coat on the side. I'm working with spray cans and only have a little bit left. So I'll see how bad the transition is when I'm done. If I have to redo the whole thing, then I'll have to get another can of chemical remover, and 2 cans of gloss white. Which would be about 40 bucks.
I'll post pics of the transition. Crossing finger it's not bad.
