so it's a nice ride along #3 and you're the caboos of the group your riding w/. You're flying along and outta no where your all of a sudden revving the piss outta your bike. WTF?
chain broke and you are screwed. Manage to pull over and you hear your buddies scream off into the distance.
You wait for your buddies to come back ... and wait. You go back to find your chain. No cell service in range. f-damn!!

Well that wasn't me thankfully. I was the guy that stopped to see if he needed a ride. We figured it would probably better if he stayed w/ his bike, his friends should noticed that he was no longer behind them. Shouldn't they have???
Before I left I told him if I see his buddies I'll tell them the deal.

--- I drove for fifty to sixtykms before I saw a couple of them. They were pulled off to the side fixing their fairings. So I am thinking ... if the the side of the bike didn't break, they would've still been going?? I told them what happened. His other 2 friends; I didn't see for another twenty kms after that.

u might wanna consider better riding buddies or if you're riding in front, make sure you see the guy behind you when you come out of a corner or hit a straight.

hope it worked out for you June.

^ Agreed. That's the one of the best parts of riding in a group. If something goes bad, you have others to assist.

No offense, but I think he needs to re-evaluate who his "friends" are.

What if he had crashed and was seriously injured???

Always have someone that will wait up for you if you fall behind!

I often ride with FuriousFiero (Phil) and even in a large group we don't leave each other behind. On Martina's big ride out to Harrison Hot springs a couple weekends ago we were both at the front of a large group (35+ people) and I stopped in the middle of a intersection to stop oncoming traffic so the group could stay together. After being at the back of the group for 2 minutes I pass him on the side of the road.. he waited up for me to make sure everything was OK even though I was just doing something as simple as setting a blocker.

On a ride to Princeton his hand got stung by a bee and was swelling like mad, so he had to seriously hold back through turns. I never let him stray more than 1 minute behind me before I would wait up for him.

It's just stupid to ride with people that don't care for your well being. Make sure you have someone that will wait up for you should you ever fall behind!

I think it's a fine balance. I think people do not necessarily "don't care" if they don't wait, they may trust that rider's ability and assume that everything is fine and the rider is just riding his/her own ride. This will be the majority of the cases but yes sometimes things go wrong. Other times they might indeed not care but I don't think that's necessarily the case.

I like where your head is. But, I would try to talk you out of blocking an intersection. Some people see a green light and loose track of the brake pedal. I would just pull over at a good spot and wait.

many of the group rides i have been on, we discussed who would lead, who would sweep, and who was a new rider. especially riding in areas such as '' wherethefokami bc'' there is no way in hell you want a rider to break down, crash and be stranded. its just the right thing to do to watch out for the group you ride in.

Choose carefully who you ride with. Most of the time you know in seconds if you're riding with the right people just by how they ride. I normally try to ride as a sweeper because I'm the only one I know I can count on to stop if someone in the group needs help. But I've also been on the other side of the coin...
I was riding along, in the sweep position, after a stop and noticed things randomly flying out of my tank bag. I turned around to pick up a few things, and once I got going again I was very glad to see the guy I was riding with come back to check on me. We rode for a few more miles before I crashed, and he stayed with me until the ambulance took me away. Then he took my tank bag which had my cell phone in it and contacted my wife for me since I was unconscious and couldn't.
This is the kind of guy you wanna ride with. When something goes wrong, you don't want to be alone. Choose your riding buddy's carefully.
By the way, thanks again Peter! I owe you big time.

Hey you are truly the lucky one.. who would have known what would have happened if the other guy wasn't there?!?

but back to the topic. i've been through the same thing - buddies left me out by myself. I'm just happy nothing happened to me.

I'd just like to say to every rider out there: Make sure you ride with guys who you can TRUST. you never know what is going to happen because at any day at any time you won't expect to crash. and your probably thinking "of course we don't expect to crash, if we did then we probably wouldn't go out riding that day"

The leader in any group ride needs to slow down on one of the straight sections every 10 minutes or less until he gets a headcount or gets some sort of signal from the others in back to indicate that everyone is there.

Sweepers are a fine idea but what happens if it's the sweeper that breaks down or crashes? Obviously the rider should be chosen for skill that avoids the crashing option but Murphy is a constant riding companion and a broken bike is something that can happen to anyone. So the leader needs to slow down and gather their flock here and there and if it looks like someone even MAY be missing then pull over to the shoulder and stop for a headcount.

If the ride group breaks up into sub groups with a faster bunch forging out and a slower group left then the front man of the slow group becomes the leader for that part of the ride and it becomes their polite responsibility to slow down and let the stragglers catch up now and then to ensure that the group doesn't loose anyone.

This is why they call it a GROUP ride and not "a wandering flock of individual riders that happen to be sort of going towards the same desitination at their own speed and in their own time". A GROUP ride implies a certain group responsibility to ensure the survival of the weakest member of the pack.

You guys know I was only kiddin right...Even if I get ahead or my friends get ahead we all normally hold up to see the headlight in the mirror, and if we can't see it then we turn around...

I hate riding with people who don't look out for each other.

If you have gone more than 2 minutes and the guy behind you is not there. Turn around and go back.

What if your friend did bin it and was bleading to death or something like that. Time is crucial in these situations.

I've been on so many group rides where you come around a corner and your thinking where's buddy behind me ? Almost 90% of the time they have crashed.

Our Kamloops Interior Supper rides usually consist of a new rider or two every Thurs night. It gives people a chance to try riding in a group setting and although we leave the parking lot with an average of 12 bikes or so we end up spreading out into differing groups of speed and ability of about 3-4 bikes per group until rally points or final destination are reached.

Since riding with this group this year I tend to sweep at the rear and found they always have "regrouping" points that everyone just slows or pulls over and waits until they see me bumbling up the road.
Then off we go again, I've found on most every ride the new riders that were a bit nervous of what the "group rides" are about seem to be put at ease and look forward to coming back knowing that they can ride at their pace and won't be abandoned and know there's a mechanic sweeping the rear.

In our group i'm more than happy to ride at the back and keep an eye on what's happening, but if sweep is an unwelcome position perhaps take turns for a day, or portion of the trip.

:laughing :laughing :laughing man you crack me up

I dunno why people even need to think about this... I think it's common courtesy to wait / pull over etc.... It's just plain rude to leave someone like that
