I've done lots of action shots with my A75 with good success. The key is to prefocus on something in the right area by pushing the button half way down so it beeps and shows a little green rectangle. Then pan up track, catch the bike in the finder or screen and pan smoothly with them and push the button the rest of the way at the right pre-focus point while maintaining the "flow" of your body. You'll find that it's smoother if you hold your arms steady and rotate at the waist in a smooth consistent manner. And be sure to maintain the pan well past the click point.

Of course these rules of panning for action shots apply to every camera. The prefocus trick is just what works on the P&S and many of the pro-sumer jobbies. Done well you can get equally good results as the DSLR camers can.

PS: that's one of my team mates Frank Brown on good ol' Patches #111

Thats what I was doing. The pre-focus thing. But I was messing wit my settings every other picture so my pics were very incosistent.

I saw you on bike #111. I recognized the HJC leathers. Unfortunately my batteries were really low, so I wasnt able to take anymore pics cause the camera was loading to slow. Next time I will be more prepared.

PS-is there anymore track days this year?
