I completely disagree. I generally use my front brakes but using my rear brakes very important IMHO.

I remember when i went to prs, i was taught to use 90% front breaks. And just try to feather tap the rear. The only time i really use the rear is to flash my brake lights to inform the vehicle behind me im slowing down.

Sounds like with your limited experience and choice of first bike, that you really need to develop more "situational awareness". That will save your bacon countless times. You got off light this time with an easy fix for your bike and not a major screw up in traffic, lesson learned I hope. Have you taken a riding course?
