I was riding out by UBC today and as I was going by the parkade that is right by the north end of the school on the road that goes to Jericho Beach, some guy hit me with his car. He was taking a left turn out of the parkade to head west on street that I was on. I was heading west. He had a stop sign and I did not. He wasn't even looking left. He slowly rolled out past the stop line paused and then just as I was going by his car, he hits me square on. My bars do a full lock to the left and I go flying over the bars and roll once or twice. I had slowed right down, cuz I had a feeling he didn't see me. I should've stopped, but I didn't think someone could be that ignorant. You have to look both ways! I was contemplating using my horn and in hindsight, I should have. I should've stopped altogether, but I'm okay for the most part. I've got some scrapes and bruises, but I walked away from the accident. Luckily, there were like ten witnesses and a cop nearby who came to the scene immediately.
My bike definately took the worst of the accident. There isn't a panel on the thing that isn't scratched. The only areas that didn't get scratched are my headlights and the front part of the front fairing, my tank and my new pipe (thank god.) So, looks like I'm gonna be bikeless for a while. Sucks cuz I just insured last Saturday and I have a five day weekend this week. Oh well, atleast I'm okay.

That sucks dude. I'm glad your okay though, thats the main thing. In the end, a bike is just a bike. Good to hear that you've got witnesses and a cop to boot. I hope everything goes okay with ICBC.....good luck. Hindsight is 20/20 so don't beat yourself up over it. It was his fault and nobody elses. I'd suggest yanking the pipe before you go to ICBC though. Just incase they decide to write it off, you'll never see it again (but I didn't say that).

Good to hear that you are okay.

I swear, it should be friggin' mandatory that as part of getting your license you have to spend one or two weeks riding a scooter or something out on the street. Spending some time out on the road without being in the safety of their cage will teach these people what it's like to be out there on a bike and maybe they'll be more mindful of us. (What to do about people who have a drivers license? Make them do the same thing the next time their license comes up for renewal. Not realistic, I know. But a guy can dream.)

What scares the crap out of me is when I'm stopped (usually in rush hour traffic) and I'm watching my mirrors and see some dumbass is coming barreling up behind me. I start planning my escape route because I don't want to be sandwiched between him and the car ahead of me. This almost happened to me twice in one week on the Putallo Bridge.

you can't take anything for granted on the streets. You gotta fight to survive.... always keep that guard up.... Sometimes you just gotta ride aggressive, you are a moving target... no, you are a unseen target....

When I first started riding, I used to obey the laws all the time and ride like a sweet little angel :angel .... but now, I found that it was much safer beening more aggressive :evilgrin on the streets and not give any cage a chance to get close. So what if I piss off cages all the time, I dont give a crap.... better me than them....

That really sucks, I hope the cop wrote him up with a bunch of tickets. Cagers really do need to pay better attention. I drive a car as most of us do and I always give bikes a little more room. Oh well, the important part is that you are ok, but remember it always hurts more a couple days after, then at the scene.

Oh man, glad your ok and make sure and take of the pipe and maybe your piaa lights if they are still intact before ICBC. Do you think they will fix it or right it off ? For your sake I hope they right it off then you can have a fresh bike rather than a fixed one.

question

That same think almost happened to me about an hour ago except that I honked and they managed stopping in time. I can't believe some people.I hope that this doesn't sound like a stupid question but "When you say cagers, do you mean anyone driving a car?"

glad to hear you are ok....don't worry about the bike I am sure if they write it off or get it fixed it wil be in no time....in terms of that hindsight thing...thanks to my accident...now whenevr I think of maybe I shoud stop or honk or light up....I DO.....if I think about it then I do it, I have stoped questioning myself again about such things, after all worst case seneraio is the other guy will get a bit irked that I lighted him/her up or honked, and if I stopped he/she wouldn't even notice....

Very glad to hear you are okay man!

Like everyone else said, hind sight is 20/20, don't beat yourself about it, just learn from it and move on.

Sucks about the bike though.. hopefully they write it off and you can get the cash for a brand new one sooner.

Jim.

I am sorry that I failed to ask if you were okay. I was just so pissed off that it almost happened to me last night on the way home from work. Would hate to lose a riding a future riding partner.

Wow, thank goodness you're okay. I'm interested in hearing what the driver said to the cop! Did he apologize or try to pass it off as your mistake? If he didn't at least apologize and get out of the car to check if you were okay, cop or not, i would have gone nuts on the car with all that adrenaline pumping through me!
Man, 'cause even if you were in a car that idiot would have hit you!

:firemad

If/when i become a cop....... i'lll be giving out billions of dollars worth of tickets to people every month... :hangman
