My bike was sitting out on a relatively busy street. The prospective thieves drilled through the side of the ignition to try to get the steering lock off, without realizing that that wasn't going to do shit. Maybe they got scared off, not sure, but they left the bike with a trashed igntion.

People claim that the steering lock is easy to take off and that it does nothing, but mine saved my bike from getting stolen. Given what I know about the ease of hot wiring a bike, I will always have mine on from now on and suggest you do the same.

Didn't have any other theft protection on it. I don't much believe in it as pretty much anything can be overpowered by some powerful bolt cutters.

Having a bike in Vancouver is one thing, parking it outside or in an un-secured area is another.

Theives don't like being taunted or being denied... They are probably on the ferry to Vic right now!

Just ask Charles about theives....

I always worry when parking my bike, I make the best effort that I can to park it infront of busy stores or in a large crowd of people!

then again roketman parking infront of a large group of ppl also increases the amount of idiots that will say oh nice bike im gunno sit on it and knock it over then merge back into the crowd and noone will know it was me

they gonna come back, they know you can't ride it now. keep an eye on it.
True that.

When some theives damaged my GF's front rotor trying to pry off the disc lock they rendeered the bike unrideable....

they came back the next day with a truck and trailer.... only they got scared off by the neighbors. They know its there, most likely they will come back.

Yes, cause nothing ever gets stolen out of underground parking. Look at past "stolen bike threads"

I happen to believe that a bike is probably safer out, on a busy street, than in an underground parking lot where no one goes at 3 am, and the theives have all the time in the world. My bike spends some time on the street, some in my underground, but I don't think I have any better ofa chance of keeping it regardless where it is. I have a feeling that the thieves we're scared off by someone out on the street and that is why they didn't finish the job. That probably wouldn't have happened in my underground.

Glad to hear you still have your bike.

... however, it's quite common for thieves to just lift a motorcycle into a van or truck where steering locks/disk locks have little effect.

Thanks.

And yes, I agree. In that sense, nothing short of a bike boot (which my building won't allow me to install) will not stop the bike from getting stolen. Chains are pretty much worthless and an alarm can be disarmed amazingly easily on a motorcycle.

I had my bike parked in an alley downtown for 2 years and it was never touched.

The key is to be nice to the homeless guys, give them cans and the odd beer. They will scare away the real thieves.
