This is an honest, real, unedited email I had with a US Suzuki dealer over the last week or so. Names omitted to protect the incident (pun), enjoy!

Hello,
I am ready to buy a new Suzuki V-Strom 650 in full, in cash right now. Here is the pricing I will pay for the bike will all fees and all costs included (except taxes which I will take care of). I would prefer the ABS model.
New V-Strom 650 $5,400
New V-Strom 650 ABS $5,800
You can call me anytime, but I am 100% firm on my offering price, as that is my maximum budget!

WE WON'T HAVE ABS MODELS TILL SPRING BUT WE'LL SELL YOU A NON-ABS MODEL FOR $6,893 OUT THE DOOR. LET US KNOW IF YOU'RE INTERESTED, EH.

Hello,
Thank you for your asking price of $6,893. To confirm, is that inclusive of all costs and fees inclusive of taxes?

YES IT IS. LET US KNOW WHICH COLOR YOU WOULD LIKE TO RESERVE, BOTH BLUE AND GRAY IN STOCK READY TO GO.

Hello,
That's very good to know, would you be kind enough to tell me the % tax rate, and total price pre-tax, because as a Canadian I actually will be paying the taxes due at the border (13% Cdn.) and would be paying all other costs to you directly. If you are not familiar with how it all works with vehicles that get registered in Canada but bought in the US, I can bring you up to speed.

ACTUALLY, THERE IS NO SALES TAX IN THE STATE OF OREGON. THE PRICE BREAKDOWN IS $6,699 BIKE
144 FREIGHT/PREP
50 DOCUMENTATION
$6,893 TOTAL TO DEALER
AS YOU KNOW, CANADIAN TAX IS PAID AT BORDER. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, LET ME KNOW!

Hello,
Oh I thought you were in Washington, in that case my best counter is $6,100 out the door all-in.

I'M SORRY, WE CAN'T EXCEPT THAT. OUR OFFER STANDS. LET ME KNOW IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND.
THANKS-

Hello,
Perhaps you'll be more open to my offer as the months go by, and sales lag due to the rain and cold, please let me know if you change your mind. I any case I suggest you counter offer if you want to sell a V-Strom 650 and I'll give it due consideration.

OUR VERY LOWEST OFFER WOULD BE $6,821 TOTAL TO DEALER. LET ME KNOW IF INTERESTED.
THANKS-

Hello,
Are you including sales taxes as I do not pay them being Canadian.

WE DO NOT HAVE SALES TAX IN OREGON. ANY CANADIAN TAX WOULD BE PAID SEPERATELY BY YOU WHEN BROUGHT INTO CANADA.

Hello,
I did not notice that you were in Oregon and I understand fully about the tax implications for me as a Canadian importing the bike into Canada. The best pricing I have to date is $6,400 all-in out the door in Washington state, and as you may know because I am a Canadian importing the bike into Canada, I do not pay Washington tax.
I am sure, given the time of year, you can do considerably better that your present all-in asking price of $6,821. Your present all-in asking price is 1.8% higher than Suzuki's MSRP of $6,699. You are asking me to travel much farther and pay $421 more, please let's be reasonable!

I MIGHT HAVE A TINY BIT MORE FLEXIBILITY, BUT I WON'T MATCH OR BEAT $6,400. THE V-STROM IS ONE OF OUR BEST SELLER'S, AND I CAN'T SELL YOU ONE THAT CHEAP WHEN I GET MORE FROM LOCAL CUSTOMERS WHO WILL SERVICE WITH US AS WELL. WE TEND TO BE CONSISTENT FOR EVERYONE ON PRICING. ONE CUSTOMER SHOULDN'T PAY MORE THAN ANOTHER JUST BECAUSE THEY AREN'T AS SHREWD AT NEGOTIATIONS. THAT WOULD BE BAD BUSINESS ETHICS. AT ANY RATE, IF YOUR $6400 PRICE IS AUTHENTIC, YOU SHOULD TAKE IT. LET ME KNOW OTHERWISE.
THANKS-

Hello,
A quick question as you've peaked my curiosity
Based on your claim that all customers should pay the same for ethical reasons I must assume:
You refuse to buy toilet paper on sale and insist on paying the regular price.
You do not purchase any products from discount retailers such as at Costco or Wal-Mart if you have seen them sold for more at another retailer.
I would be interested to know what school of ethical thought you adhere to, and how you apply this to your purchases.

BASED ON YOUR EXAMPLE, YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. TOILET PAPER GOES ON SALE FOR EVERYONE BASED ON SUPPLY/DEMAND, NOT JUST THE ASTUTE BUYER. IF I SUDDENLY HAD A LARGE NUMBER OF V-STROM 650'S AND NO ONE INTERESTED, I MIGHT PUT THEM AT A DISCOUNTED PRICE TO GENERATE MORE INTEREST, BUT THAT SALE PRICE WOULD BE AVAILABLE TO ALL WHO WALK IN THE DOOR, JUST LIKE WAL-MART OR COSTCO. LIKEWISE, IF TOILET PAPER ISN'T ON SALE, YOU WOULD BE HARD PRESSED TO NEGOTIATE A LOWER PRICE WITH THE CLERK AT THE CHECK-OUT STAND. AS FOR ME PERSONALLY, MY TIME IS VALUABLE TO ME, SO I'LL PAY MORE FOR QUICK SERVICE.

Hello,
Your arguments lack logic:

You made the claim that all customers should pay the same and you argue this is due to your "ethics". Now you say if toilet paper goes on sale everyone benefits equally. I don't know where you get your notions of reason and logic, but they are not apparent in your dialogue.

- Toilet paper cannot and does not go on sale for everybody equally, unless it can be assured everybody can buy said toilet paper equally and in equal amounts, which of course, is an absurd proposition.

- Toilet paper does not go on sale simply due to your oversimplified claim of "supply and demand", in fact there are many reasons why toilet paper goes on sale, I'll list some of them here:
Loss leader advertising
Pricing for the purposes of increasing market share

- Your argument that your time is too valuable to you, and thus (by some bizarre stretch of the imagination) this would support your contention that I should pay whatever is asked by you, in your perception of an ethical and equal price for all, lacks any demonstrable logic, as does your comparison to negotiating prices with a clerk at a check out, versus the purchase of a big ticket, high dollar item, such as a motor vehicle.

Or perhaps you are trying to compare yourself to a clerk selling toilet paper who not only has no control over the price of the toilet paper, but is simply selling a basic low priced commodity item. Do you in fact perceive the V-Strom to be a basic low priced commodity item akin to toilet paper, and you simply the equivalent to a toilet paper sales clerk?

SALES IS SALES. I'LL BET YOU SPEND MORE IN YOUR LIFETIME ON TOILET PAPER THAN MOTORCYCLES. THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST.

Hello,
I thank for your time, and perhaps at some point we will reach agreement. Good point about the total cost of toilet paper, my wife filled up the back of our van with the stuff on sale!

Buying and selling vehicles isn't a logical process. He's made you an offer, you've countered, and he's declined because he can sell the bike locally for what he's offered it to you. "But my offer is more logical" isn't going to get him to drop his price.
Shouldn't this be in the funnies section?
Yes it should be! I could not resist having some fun! I got quite a chuckle out of it, and you never know, dealers do change their asking prices over time! Even this guy did (a bit).
LET US KNOW IF YOU'RE INTERESTED, EH
at least he speaks canadian
The salesman emailed me back and I edited my first post to show this. I kind'a like the guy, you gotta have a bit a weird streak to hang in there!

I'll bet if I met this salesman, all I would have to do is say "toilet paper" and we'd both crack up laughing!
and your price would go up.....
I was in communications with a few dealers from the Northwest, over a period of a few weeks, this was collected from a series of emails, no surprise I did not remember where they are all located.

What I find most entertaining about Doug, is he clearly takes the time to read my posts very carefully, to the point where he will even note something as unimportant and irrelevant as the fact that I did not remember the location of the dealer!

This at the same time as claiming it's "typical chumly bullshit". Doug clearly loves carefully reading my posts, and making inane criticisms about things of no consequence. Off to the ignore list he goes, along with his stablemate ssblade.
Wow.

... just wow.
Typo: "stablemate" as edited above
Wow.

hahaha. Knew you'd get a kick out of this thread. :)
Chumly, you have way too much time on your hand. And so does the salesman. I would have terminated the conversation much earlier.
So where's the new wee strom? You did buy one right?
You have people on ignore? What for? Their words might jump off the monitor and strangle you?
You're nothing but a tire kicker or an opportunist until you bother to show up in person with the cash.

I'm surprised he was that polite until he insulted you at the end.

More like I don't play if the price is not OK!

And I have no problems whatsoever poking fun at salesman who claim they are applying “business ethics” as their justification for selling near MSRP.
So where's the new wee strom? You did buy one right?
No not yet, the dealers are all claiming they sell so well, they won't come off list by much if at all, even at this time of year.

I'm in no rush, and there are few other bikes I like as just well, but for different reasons, such as the ST1300 (killer deal in Ohio on brand new '05's for $10,000 US all-in shipped to Kent Washington) and an '05 FZ-1 (Washington state for $6,400 US all-in).

The thing is, it's just as easy for me to communicate with a number of dealers, on a few different bikes, all at the same time.

Any of the three: V-Strom, St1300, FZ-would make me happy, as they are all pretty upright and I tested them all, whichever one all works out is fine by me........... but that email is just too funny.

Why the wee-strom and not the 1000 if you are considering bigger bikes as well?
G
if i were the salesman i'd charge you a 10% fee for killing christ. then i'd charge you another 7.5% for driving a miata.
