Undertails, are they worth it or overpriced??

I say hack it! Undertails look great, but they are WAY too expensive. And then the license plate covers most of the good looks anyway, so I suggest saving the money and hacking the fender.

I have also seen some people take their whole tails out (battery box and all) and paint the bottom to match their bikes. I find it looks better than normal, although not nearly as neat as an undertail. I have also seen the bottom covered with thin sheet metal that is painted to match the body. I think this looks great, and it still inexpensive. You can just rivet the sheet metal to the tray and it looks good.

Undertails look best when they're clean IMO. You ride in all weather, so I'd say that cutting the fender maybe your best bet. I would maybe look at chopping the whole fender off right up to the tail light and building a bracket that would incorporate you license plate and turn signal. I'm sure Adam will post pics of his R6 when its done. We may be able to do the same for yours .

I put on the competition werkes fender eliminator this past winter and can say it definitely looks better than stock...it doesn't look as good as the painted undertails, but they were too expensive for me...

do you have any pics or links that show your fender eliminator? I'd like to see it...

hmmm interesting, looks like fender choping is the way to go....

hmmm well, your's looks nice and clean.... but I'll wait and see how Adam's R6 turns out before I make up my mind whether to chop everything or chop up to just below the signals....

I go along with Vrecksler about the license hiding most of the good work. And what would you do about the turn signals? Most of the really nice undertails don't allow for turnsignals at all.

I'd have to see the the trunk undersides but I don't doubt that you can get 90% of the effect for just a little time and a hacksaw blade. Just leave a little lip for the plate to mount onto.

Here's an example of what a couple of hours (mostly spent fretting about the cutting ) and a hand saw can do for you. The little lip you see still there is totally covered by the license plate.

My trunk key slot is on the fender, so I was unable to remove the hole thing. But I hacked the fender right below the key hole, and when the plate is mounted right under the taillight, it covers the hackjob. Then you can cut a hole in the plate, or just mount one side with a bolt and the other side with a clip/velcro, anything tht will allow you to remove one side and swing the plate down to access the key hole.

I hacked mine nice and even, but even if you mess up, the plate will be longer anyway. Then you just drill a couple holes to throw the bolts in and it is done. Add some short stalks and you have a homemade CW type thing.

And if you are not happy, you can always go the full undertail later on.

Hey,vrecksler. Is your seat/trunk lock on a cable like mine is? If so there is no reason why it can't be moved as long as you have somewhere it'll fit that the cable can reach. Even it it doesn't it would be interesting to see if it could be replaced with some bicycle cable. Then you could put the lock pretty well anywhere. And nothing says your plate can't be on a spring loaded flap with the trunk lock underneath the plate.

Heres a pic of mine. Not too clear but I kept the OE signals. I'll be chopping the rest later this year and mounting short stalks. Adam's bike is the Guinea Pig so We'll see what it looks like.

you guys are forgeting that our bikes already have a undertail, all we are doing is unbolting the stock black mud guard (like the one shown in my avatar) and mounting a small bracket to mount the lights and plate to...no hacking for us

hack jobs rule... very cheap and almost the same effect at the end.

hahaha, not mine but I would like to try and see if it's possible to tow a boat on a sportbike hehehe, oh man, I dont think our little 600s make enough torque to pull that much weight.... In fact, I can only imagine how much fun it would be to launch the boat and then take it out of the water on your bike hahahaha oh man :laughing :laughing

forget towing the bike, SELL THE BOAT!! think what sweeeeeeeetttt bikes and gear you could buy with the cash!!!
And since it was my idea, i'm expecting a kickback, of course......
