Gorgeous day for a ride yesterday, took the bike up Lougheed and out to Harrison. I was about 15 mins from Harrison when the accident happened. An ambulance was heading towards me in the oncoming lane. I was following a series of cars. The car two infront of me, slammed on his brakes at the last minute, the car directly infront of me did the same. His tires locked up, smoke and all. I hammered the brakes as well, and realized I wasnt going to have the room to stop in time. The shoulder was not an option as the car infront of me had already swerved over there. And oncoming traffic was not a choice either. So, rather than hitting the car with my bike, and in turn...me, I chose to dump the bike. I laid it down on the left side and let it slide away from me. I was sliding on my side and back, and ended up on my stomach. My helmet did not touch the ground. When I came to rest, I quickly got up, as I didnt know how close cars were behind me. And ran over to my bike. Adrenaline flowing, I heaved the bike up like it was a 125cc dirt bike and put the stand down. I managed to ride it home, after I had collected my thoughts. I had to shift with my hand, since the toe piece of the shift lever is broken.

My gear did its job, the textile jacket is shredded in a few spots, as are my jeans. My gloves and riding boots are scuffed, but are otherwise ok. My jacket shifted a little when I was sliding, so I have some road rash on my elbow, but its not too bad. My knee has some rash on it as well. All in all, I am more sore and achy than anything. I am just amazed at how fast it happened. I was up, riding, enjoying the scenery, and then wham...I was down.

I'll be taking the bike off the road and repairing it over the winter. So far, from what I can see, the parts I'll need are: front faring (nose), left faring, left turn signal, engine crankcase cover, rear faring stay, and a left rear-set. I'll post pics when I get a chance. I can't even look at the bike right now.

If anyone can offer and help, links, or knows of parts I could have, buy, etc...please let me know. Ride safe guys! I guess I'll be driving to the BBQ this weekend, damnit!

That is true. I was going to pull the bike off the road in 2-3 weeks anyways, still not a fun way to end the season. Trying to work today is proving difficult, I can barely bend my right leg, can't put my left arm down to type, and my whole body aches. I need a beer!

i'd get the bike painted, get an nrc cover, and throw some rearsets on it. that's the #23 combo crash special. and to all the guys that said "laying it down" is an excuse from harley riders that can't brake- yet another sportrider that did it successfully.

Welcome to the club Craig. Only ten more to go, and you'll catch up to me!

If it doesn't kill you or maim you, it only adds character. So I say, congratulations on your first crash. :thumbup

Glad to hear you're doing all right. If you need some muscle relaxants and/or pain killers, I just filled my prescription. Hey, we can go to physio together :p

I'll be getting the NRC cover, got a line on one already from a BCSB member. The farings are gonna kill me to replace though, thats gonna suck.

Yeah dude, DON'T buy new farings retail. Even just buying the stickers will set you back big time. Do what ssblade said. It would still (likely) be cheaper for you to sell the bike scratched (but otherwise fixed) and buy another clean gixxer, rather than replacing the fairings.

Also, don't mean to rub it in Craig (or maybe I do :p), but this is why I was telling you to buy a beater for your first season.

Did anybody get out of their cage to see if you were alright and help you?
Nope, not a single cager stopped to see if I was ok. The only person that stopped was a guy and his wife on a Goldwing about 10 mins after it happened.

You must not look friendly. ;) When I went down I had everyone and their dog stopping to see if I was alright.

They all offered to be witnesses to ICBC too! a lot of good it'll do me. lol
