I'm just curious to know how many of you guys/gals have a radar detector mounted on your bike. I know that there has been many debates on this but i wanted to put out a poll to see who has one and who doesn't before i make my decision. Thanks

Meh, no time to look at detectors in my opinion.... Your eyes on the road are better at spotting ghost cars and laser traps than a detector.

My 2 cents.

that's one of the stupidest statements to date :rolleyes

you think your eyes work better than a radar detector? cool.. let me strap you to the from of my bike... if you fuck up and I catch a ticket I'll make sure you pay for it...

on second thought I think I'll use a radar detector. :D

i hear there are some that comes with headphones. so that you don't need to look.
I would really like one, but i'm lazy and too much research invovled. It would be nice to twist the wrist without having to worry about a huge speeding ticket.

Yeah, the one i was looking at is the Escort passport 8500 X50 which comes with a headphone jack, so i won't be taking my eyes off the road unless there's a hot babe waiting at the bus stop:devillook .

I use a Valentine with ear-jack/phone in helmet. Saved my butt numerous times and worth every penny :)

I have an Escort Passport 8500 mounted under my fairing and run up to a Radar Screamer. The Radar Screamer connects to the detector via the audio out jack and puts out a 100db audio signal (you can hear it from 2 car lengths away at highway speeds - so I'm told).

It saved me from 2 tickets in Washington last weekend.

yup yup yup, Escort Solo S2, and yes it has paid for itself. As Newbusa says, little speaker in the helmet and you're set.

But IMO a radar detector is only usefull out on the highways and mountains. It won't do jack for you in the city, except give you a false sense of security if you ride like it will save you.

Sure it may warn you of the radar on Knight street a couple of blocks ahead, but does nothing for you in most situations when you are observed playing. The City is not the place to "need" a radar detector, again IMO.

my dad mentioned that it will work fine if theyre getting ppl ahead of you but if youre the only guy out there the cop stands with the gun pointed at the ground turned off and then when he sees you coming he pulls it up and then gets you the same time you pick him up specifically because he knows ppl have radar detectors

I agree. I think the city is not the place to speed. Get out of town, fer crying out loud.:laughing

Sounds to me like wearing a motorcycle helmet. I don't fall on my head every ride, but if I do, it's good to have on my melon.
Seriously, the detector will not prevent you getting a ticket if you speed with impunity. It will not "save," you under each and every circumstance. It can be used to advise you when, and where radar, or laser, is operating.
Isn't that the point? It's a tool, use it or not, your choice.
The only sure fire way of not receiving a performance award is always to obey all traffic laws. Just like Kanelupis eloquently suggests.
(oh, and make sure you plate is on the bike, not in your pocket).:surrender

You are fairly new to the board. Best thing you could do is use the search engine. There has been a LOT of useful information on the subject elicited by people here who have already chimed in to your thread. There are at least 4 threads in the past 6 months that will give you what you need to make up your mind. Prolly more than 4 but that's what I can recall at the moment.

Actually, I agree with you entirely. I've used all kinds of contraptions including headsets. Unless I get the chance to use a "Screamer" I find:

  • Relying on my spidy sense
  • using common sense like not screaming over a rise on the highway at mach 2
  • slowing down for the know hot spots on roads I know
  • keeping the speeding in the twisties
  • speed limit'ish in the straights
....to be just as effective. To be honets, a radar detector will not help you in twisty sections. It'll go off pretty much at the same time as when the cop is in sight.

Not true.

Keep in mind that most radar is being projected from moving police vehicles, not stationary radar traps. Examples:

My detector has given me up a 1/4 of a mile of warning when raging in the twisties as the radar waves have bounced off of trees and rocks from an oncoming police cruiser. Just enough time to shut it down, to see the cruiser come around the oncoming corner.

Another example:

On last Saturday, I was on the I-5 doing about 130 towards to border when I started to get an intermitant signal every 10 or 20 seconds. It was straight and not a lot of traffic. I decided to play it safe and slowed down to the speed limit and kept it in the right lane, behind traffic. The signal got stronger and stronger and then about a minute later, a sherrif's cruiser is passing me from behind. I reckon that he had been gaining on me for several miles. Thanks to the detector, I was warned that he was behind me and gaining from probably 2 or 3 miles away.

Since most of the radar you'll encounter is from moving police cruisers, you're going to get radar signal bouncing around all over the place and it's easy to pick up from kilometers away.

But you are correct that it's always best to ride with your spidey senses and not to rely solely on the detector. The detector is only a tool that will help you, it's not a get out of jail free card.

Although *knock wood*, I've never gotten a speeding ticket while riding with my detector. But I've gotten lots without it.

Laser guns beam at one KM is about 5 feet wide. You can be gunned and the car beside you with a detector will not know that there is a laser trap ahead.

Radar from moving cars are not always on, they have an instant on function, the police officer can trigger the radar at will.

Radar from moving cars in rural areas are usually on all the time.
that's why I promote the rocky mountain RMR C450
