I thought that by law, all pumps in Canada with an octane rating under 91 have to contain up to 15% ethanol.

I've always used shel 91 because it says it's ethanol free. Now for my car I would like to try the e85 but it's not available anywhere.

 

I believe Chevron 94 is alcohol free at all BC stations.

 

It appears so. From that site:

Alaska: All stations dispense ethanol-free gasoline.
Alberta: All stations dispense ethanol-free gasoline. Some also dispense E10, so check the pump.
British Columbia: all 94-octane Chevron fuel is ethanol-free.

 

I think Chevron is one of the only BC stations with 94 left.

 

From my personal experience in the Lower Mainland, only Shell's 91 and Chevron's 94 are ethanol free. If and when I go to Shell, I try to stick to the Shell's that have a dedicated pump for their 91 octane. There will be a decal that indicates whether or not their 91 contains ethanol or not.

 

Shell 91, Esso 91, Petro Canada 91, Chevron 94, are the only province wide brand name fuels in BC without ethanol "enrichment".

I always use either of these gasolines and on the pumps they always say 10% ethanol.


Chevron 94 is a plus for no ethanol, not so sure about Shell 91. Have not filled up at Shell for a few years now.

So what is the big concern about ethanol?

Besides the deforming bike fuel tanks and possibility of water accumulating if left standing; what are the other issues?

I've been using nothing but US fuel (Shell) for the past 2 years and haven't had an issue. My engines aren't tuned and I go through gas quick enough to make David Suzuki cry.

 

What other issues do you need? It became a very serious issue for me after the tank on my Guzzi could not be re-installed after holding that crap. Sold the bike.

 

I only use chevron 94. I don't even think about anything else.

 

+1. For the bike - absolutely. I fill up BEFORE going to the states for a ride.

 

Do some research of your own. Check this site out. Keep track of everything in reagards to fuel expenses and which one is better.

There appear to be a number of victims of marketing here. Don't feel badly - we're all susceptible. :laughing

I've been using manufacturer-recommended 91 octane for years in my Japanese, German, and Italian bikes and cars. I use 87 octane in one of the bikes because, again, that's what's recommended. Never had an issue and I don't expect to have any issues.

Believe it or not, your owners manual is a good source of information.

 

Just a couple updates. The website Puregas.org is unresponsive on removing stations they say have 0% ethanol. FYI, all Shell stations across Canada dropped 0% ethanol back in early 2022.
Also, every CO-OP in Canada has 0% ethanol 91, on a shared nozzle, so will get potentially .8 of a litre of 10% ethanol 87 octane before 91 runs through. Which was the issue when Shell had 0% ethanol 91 on their shared nozzle.

Parkland Refinery, supplier of Chevron in SW BC, is switching over from winter to summer blends. As a result right now, some are out of regular, and are selling 0%ethanol 94 at regular price. Keep an eye out. Richmond, Delta, South Van, Maple Ridge, western Surrey right now there are a few.
